An evening of solo works from the What is Performance series
What is Performance? is an ongoing workshop and performance series curated and facilitated by Somya Kautia and Gia Singh Arora, exploring how the body moves, responds, resists, and performs.
Each edition is built around a specific entry point - a text, an object, a feeling - and unfolds through collaborative creation with participants from diverse backgrounds. This Performance Showcase brings together five performers who developed their work through these workshops, and are now revisiting and expanding their solos into 10-minute pieces. We explored expression through the body with Vivaran We read Amrita Pritam with Radhika and Kashish We moved with balloons with Abhinav We explored the curtain with Komal Come witness what has emerged.

Solo Performers:
Abhinav Vohra is a dancer, prancer, mover, groover, currently placed in his hometown of Amritsar. He has a background in Jazz and Contemporary from The Danceworx Performing Arts Academy, evolving into his current practice of Contemporary Floorwork and House. Presently, he is drawn to themes of longing, dissolution and introspection experimenting with how they can be expressed through the body. Abhinav's main focus in his artistic practice is rhythm, groove, characterization and most importantly, being honest.
Kashish Bhatia is a performer whose journey blends dance, theatre, and film. She began her artistic path in college theatre, where she discovered the thrill of live storytelling and the power of presence on stage. Alongside her work as a dancer, Kashish has expanded into film, exploring performance in front of the camera and adapting her expressive style to new mediums. What drives her is the connection between artist and audience - whether through movement, dialogue, or cinematic expression.
Komal Kankariya is a performer and aspiring artist from Chennai, India. Her work seeks to spark a sense of relatability and connection in the viewer. Rooted in dance but drawn to interdisciplinary forms, Komal approaches movement as an evolving, boundless entity - refusing the boxes of fixed styles. Endlessly curious (and occasionally delightfully distracted), she is drawn to contrasting practices that help keep the child in her alive.
Radhika Purohit is an Expressive Arts Therapy trainee and an aspiring curriculum and pedagogy developer. She entered the arts through third theatre, where she explored performance as a space for collaboration and experimentation. Her practice brings together theatre, poetry, movement, and storytelling. In the development sector, she has worked on creating creative learning experiences that weave art into classrooms in meaningful ways. She continues to explore how performance and pedagogy can nurture curiosity, empathy, and reflection for children and for herself.
Vivaran Dhasmana is a Head Coach at Physique 57 India, and a professional dancer and choreographer who lives by the belief that movement is a way of life. Trained at Future School of Performing Arts and formerly a company member at Split Sole Dance Academy, he blends technique, performance, and fitness with creativity and discipline. He has choreographed and performed at events like Lollapalooza, and leads high-energy classes that combine strength, rhythm, and flexibility. Whether in the studio or on stage, he helps people unlock their physical potential through intentional, joyful movement.
Curated by Gia and Somya
Somya Kautia and Gia Singh Arora have been collaborating for over four years through their workshop series What is Performance?, which explores the relationship between body, text, sound, and objects. Together, they created Under Body, Below Word - A Space, a performance that begins with the Bollywood song Beedi Jalaile and gradually deconstructs its gestures, revealing the politics of performance, body and the state.
2 reasons why you should come this evening:
1) You’re curious about how performance gets made and not just shown. These pieces have emerged from process and experimentation.
2) Because this is the kind of space we need more of! What is Performance is part of a growing ecosystem of alternate, experimental performance, work that resists formula, embraces vulnerability, and invites curiosity. Attending is also about showing up for this kind of work, so that spaces like this can keep growing!
