The film's title acronym stands for "Laminatoio a freddo", which translates to "cold rolling mill". Palazzina Laf refers to the name of a real building of the ILVA steel company in Taranto where demoted employees were confined in inhumane working conditions in the late 1990s. Through the eyes of a worker, one of the most serious cases of workplace abuse in Italian history is told. The film is based on the book "Fumo sulla città" by the Italian writer Alessandro Leogrande, to whom the film is dedicated.

About the director:
Michele Riondino (Taranto, 1979) is an actor and director, known for Palazzina Laf (2023), Dormant Beauty (2012) and The Past Is a Foreign Land (2008).
Born in Taranto, Riondino enrolled at the Silvio D'Amico National Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 2000. He began his acting career by playing roles in theatre until 2006, when he acted in The Black Arrow, a TV series directed by Fabrizio Costa. His acting breakthrough came in 2008, with The Past Is a Foreign Land, for which he was awarded best actor at the Rome Film Festival and at the Miami International Film Festival. In 2010, Riondino’s talent was acknowledged with the award of EFP Shooting Star at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Guglielmo Biraghi Award at the 67th Venice International Film Festival.
He has been playing the title character in the RAI TV-series The Young ontalbano since 2012, a spin-off prequel to the Inspector Montalbano series that are based on the detective novels of Andrea Camilleri.
Palazzina Laf (2023) is his directorial debut, a film in which he also plays the lead role of Caterino Lamanna.
