In classic girl-meets-girl fashion, Rekha and Bindu collide over a lost-and-found earring in the corridors of Sophia College for Women. They are young, hopeful and always late to catch the local train. They waltz around Bombay to the sound of Rekha’s jangling ears, and their affection slowly blossoms over chai-sutta, stolen nights at the disco, and each other’s company.
But it’s 1974, and Bindu and Rekha must navigate a Bombay dogged with rising prices and unrest in their quest to set up their first proper ‘date’.
About the play:
Jhumkewali is hausofbhaus' debut production as a collective, and aims to establish a legacy of queer joy in times of increasing queerphobia and violence across the world. We call upon joy, humour and hope as transformative forces to imagine new, hopeful futures. A tender unfurling of first love and coming-of-age, this sweet, sapphic play is an ode to queer joy in Bombay.
2. To share space with queer people across generations – drawing hope from our histories!
