About the Director:
Gabriele Salvatores (Naples, 1950) is an acclaimed Italian film director and screenwriter.
After moving to Milan at a young age, Salvatores approached the entertainment world by founding the theatre “Teatro dell'Elfo” in 1972, directing numerous avant-garde plays.
He transitioned to filmmaking with his 1983 adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which he previously adapted as a play. In 1986, together with Maurizio Totti and Diego Abatantuono, he founded the production company Colorado Film, with which he made several successful films.
His greatest international recognition came in 1992 with Mediterraneo, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film as well as three David di Donatello Awards (Best Film, Best Editing, Best Score) as well as a Nastro D’Argento for best direction. The film was the first in the so-called ‘escape trilogy’, followed by Marrakech Express (1989), Turné (1990) and Puerto Escondido (1992), works that explore themes of disillusionment and self-discovery.
Salvatores continued to diversify his work with films like Nirvana (1997), a sci-fi comedy, and I'm Not Scared (2003), a thriller based on Niccolò Ammaniti's novel.
In 2014 he made The Invisible Boy, a science-fiction film considered a success with audiences and critics, thanks to which the director won a European Film Award, being chosen by the European Film Academy's youth jury. In 2018, The Invisible Boy - Second Generation, a sequel to the 2014 film, was released.
